The Indigenous Knowledges Holder Circles offers a unique opportunity for (elder) language keepers and knowledge holders and (younger) knowledge learners to convene, exchange ideas, rejuvenate, and build meaningful connections. This project - funded by the Tamalpais Trust - aims to share knowledge, culture and Indigenous language across generations in a sanctuary space. The project offers a series of circles at Mesa Refuge. First, three knowledge learners (youngers Juanita, Sandy, and Julia) convened for 2 weeks in May. Then the knowledge keepers (elders Octaviana and Otilia) convened for 10 days in August. To conclude this special residency, the Juanita, Sandy, and Julia returned to join the elders for 4-5 days in mid-August. The culmination of both retreats is an interaction between the two groups as a form of intergenerational exchange, closing with some unforgettable experiences that expanded our understandings of Támal-ko/Coast Miwok history and present.
One such experience was led by Mesa alum Theresa Harlan of the Alliance for Felix Cove . She brought us together with folks from the Indigenous Healing Center in Marin County and RISE Youth in Berkeley, and took us to visit to her family's land and home at Felix Cove, on the Tomales Bay. Theresa gave us the history of her family and their residence at Felix Cove and discussed the work that the Alliance for Felix Cove is doing to protect, restore and rematriate the home of the last Támal-ko family to live on the western shores of Tamal-liwa/Tomales Bay.
